Mephedrone (4-Methylmethcathinone)  is a drug currently in the news in Maharashtra, especially Pune and Mumbai, with the government coming down heavily on manufacturers and distributors of the same.

What is Mephedrone?

What is Mephedrone?

It is a white, off-white, or yellowish powder. This highly addictive stimulant is closely chemically related to amphetamines and is a derivative of cathinone compounds found in khat plants in East Africa. Mephedrone produces a similar experience to drugs like amphetamines, ecstasy, or cocaine, as reported by users. It is a drug that was reportedly manufactured in China. First synthesized in 1929, mephedrone’s popularity began in 2003, and by 2007 it was available for sale on the internet. By the year 2010, it became a very common drug in Europe

It has several street names, namely MCAT, plant feeder, miaow miaow, meow meow, bounce, bath salts, mad cow, and bubbles.1,5

Routes of Administration:
It can be snorted or intravenously administered, but can also be swallowed in wraps of paper (bomb), tablet or pill form. In India, the drug manufacturers or distributors are known to mix it with pan masala and sold in sealed packs. Users consume it or also rub it on their gums.

They have thus become available to be sold at local paan shops, thus influencing young people and older individuals alike, spreading its web of use, abuse and addictive use amongst an unsuspecting population.

Legal Standing

It has been declared illegal in most countries of the world. Mephedrone entered the Indian recreational drug market in the early 2000s, deceptively sold as plant-derived. Due to a massive surge in local use, it was officially banned in India on February 5, 2015, by being classified as a psychotropic substance under the NDPS Act. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

In 2026, there has been a massive crackdown by the Central Bureau of Narcotics [ CBN] branch of Madhya Pradesh in various parts of Maharashtra like Mumbai, Pune, etc where various drug seizures of MD and manufacturing places and assets have been caught. Action of Mephedrone

It is a potent central nervous system stimulant and empathogen (produces feelings of empathy, emotional openness, and social connectedness). This is because its mechanism of action relies on interacting with three major monoamine transporters in the brain: the serotonin transporter (SERT), the dopamine transporter (DAT), and the norepinephrine transporter (NET). The effects of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine are to increase feelings of emotional closeness and sociability. At the same time, mephedrone prevents the natural reuptake of these transmitters by blocking the sites of reuptake, thus enhancing the effects.
